Maracuja, undoubtedly an exotic fruit but very well known and also used in our parts. Maybe some, calling him passion fruit, they attribute to him powers related to sexual performance, in truth he has many others but not those.
When we have the Maracuja immediately we can appreciate the very fragrant pulp, to be tasted both naturally, directly, and in fruit juices, mousses, creams, sorbets and even non-alcoholic cocktails. Although not native to our lands, this fruit can be kept for a long time, even for more than a week, thanks to a robust peel, but better to keep it in the refrigerator or even freeze it.
Maracuja Caulonia: plant
This coveted passion fruit grows on a climbing plant native to tropical regions, the name seems to be Portuguese but is inspired by indigenous sounds, it also has a Spanish name, granadilla, which refers to the seeds it contains. Let's reveal why it has this label of "passion fruit”If it is not an aphrodisiac, it is because of the shape of the flower's corolla that looks like the crown of thorns worn by Christ during his crucifixion. There The plant that produces Maracujà is called Passiflora.
When it comes to fruit of Passiflora, it should be specified which one because there are two main types, the most common in our part is the purple passion fruit (passiflora edulis), small and with dark purple skin, then there is the yellow one, larger and rarer (passiflora edulis flavicarpa).
Passion fruit has a 73% water and from the traditional point of view it contains proteins, fats, ashes, dietary fibers, carbohydrates and sugars. Among its properties is the presence of mineral salts in fair quantities potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, Zincor and selenium. The vitamins there is no shortage, especially those of group C, A, B2 and B3, K, J together with beta-carotene.
One of the reasons why the Maracujà is the fact that it should be considered an important source of antioxidant substances which have an action of contrast to free radicals and cellular aging.
Digestible, excellent for ensuring intestinal regularity with the pectin it contains, this fruit satisfies and rehydrates, absorbs carbohydrates and avoids the accumulation of fats and cholesterol. Of course, it can't have a miraculous effect if we don't have proper feeding, but it can help us too in case of gastritis and colitis. Finally, Maracuja also has a high concentration of essential fatty acids, among which they stand out Omega 6 and Omega3, which are good for the whole body.
Even in the middle of winter, if we feel like summer, we can cook us a nice maracuja mousse, a typical Brazilian recipe, to be served with ice cream waffles or a handful of dark chocolate flakes. We mix pulp and maracuja juice, then add the hardened cream and pour the mixture into one portion cups leaving them in the fridge for a couple of hours, then serve it still cold.
Among all the cocktails based on Maracujà there caipiroska is one of the timeless, it is always better to know how to prepare it. We need 5 cl of vodka, 2 cl of orange curacao, 2 maracuja 2 tablespoons of sugar, half a lime and 2 maraschino cherries as a cure.
Washed and cut the lime in half, cut the two maracuja and remove the pulp with a spoon, put everything in the shaker with the curacao orange, then pound with the muddler. After we can add the vodka, 4 ice cubes and shake for 20 seconds, finally filter into an iced cup and decorate with cherries.
If we just love the good perfume of Maracuja, we can sprinkle ourselves with this aroma, in this case very aphrodisiac. In shampoo and cream format, or with oil, it is available on Amazon for 27 euros.
